"Whatever works. It was nice doing live tracks. It's fun. But music's changed. So I just try to stay open to whatever other people are doing, try to figure out something to learn.

As soon as I start getting into that other head and start getting
an attitude about how things are changing, I think that I'm the
one who ends up on the losing end. It's better to stay open to
that stuff.

I mean, some of these guys who are doing hip hop
stuff and some of those grooves and forward progressions
and other things, it's not live, but some of it's nice. It sounds
pretty good. It's just another form of music. And now they incorporate some live playing with that. So it's better to not be closed and burn that bridge so you're not a part of it. It's better
to find out what the challenge is.

I love groove stuff. I love stuff where the groove is real strong.
Not only where it feels good for me, but you can tell that it feels good for the people listening. That's very rewarding, to communicate those kind of feelings."

*DVD Review By Steve Kiener-

Kudos to Marcus Miller for putting together the all star "Legends" super group, featuring Joe Sample, David Sanborn, Steve Gadd and Eric Clapton. It's a shame a CD never came documenting this power house ensembles short lived 1997 summer tour, consisting of 11 dates at major European jazz festivals. Thankfully there is a DVD of the bands July 4th appearance at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival.

It is very refreshing finding Eric Clapton out of his element, he plays supportive rhythm guitar and when he does solo there is no question he is one of today's true guitar greats. The rhythm section shines on every tune, Steve Gadd and Marcus Miller's hook up is plain righteous and a great study for any bassist and or drummer on what to and what not to do. It's clearly evident how much they enjoy playing together, the whole group is all smiles the entire evening.

A few highlights are on Sanborn's "Snakes"featuring great solos from both Marcus and Steve, Steve playing trademark licks and also mixing it up a bit. "First Song", a lovely ballad by bassist Charlie Haden has David Sanborn's finest moment of the night. It turns into "Tango Blues" a stunning snaky groove that everyone takes fine solos on. Next up is the Crusaders "Put It Where You Want It" that features Joe Sample, the bands intensity has really hit it's stride. A lovely take on In A Sentimental Mood features Marcus Miller on bass clarinet and a fine Eric Clapton solo which then segue ways into Clapton's "Layla". This is the most unique version I've ever heard with Marcus still playing bass clarinet, a most refreshing take on a FM radio staple. Finally with the band smoking the blues standard "Every Day I've Got The Blues" it's clearly apparent everyone both in the audience and onstage has had a wonderful musical experience.

JH: You've worked with many talented musicians. Who have you most enjoyed working with?

SG: I really don't have a favourite. I've
considered myself very lucky to have worked with so many great players
and in different areas of music. So, I
really don't have a favourite. Although,
I must say I miss Richard Tee a lot.
But he was a very good friend of mine
and I loved his music. And Eric Gale.
I want to mention them because
they were not only great musicians,
but they were good friends. I worked
with a lot of different people and Eric
and Richard would be on the job with
Paul Simon and Ralph Mac Donald.
I worked with Eric and Richard on
dates for many different artists. They
were my good friends and I miss
them. But in general, I really don't
have a favourite type of music or
a favourite musician. If the quality
is good, then I like it. I do miss
Richard and Eric, though because
I would see them a lot.

JH: Do you change your style of
drumming depending on the bass
player you are working with, or do
bass players change their style
depending on your drumming?

SG: It works both ways. I think that
a good bass player and a good
drummer will always work together
and adjust their playing for the music. Hopefully that's the way it turns out.
I think when the bass player and
drummer work that way together
then it turns out to be the best
for the music.
