*DVD Review By Steve Kiener-

Kudos to Marcus Miller for putting together the all star "Legends" super group, featuring Joe Sample, David Sanborn, Steve Gadd and Eric Clapton. It's a shame a CD never came documenting this power house ensembles short lived 1997 summer tour, consisting of 11 dates at major European jazz festivals. Thankfully there is a DVD of the bands July 4th appearance at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival.

It is very refreshing finding Eric Clapton out of his element, he plays supportive rhythm guitar and when he does solo there is no question he is one of today's true guitar greats. The rhythm section shines on every tune, Steve Gadd and Marcus Miller's hook up is plain righteous and a great study for any bassist and or drummer on what to and what not to do. It's clearly evident how much they enjoy playing together, the whole group is all smiles the entire evening.

A few highlights are on Sanborn's "Snakes"featuring great solos from both Marcus and Steve, Steve playing trademark licks and also mixing it up a bit. "First Song", a lovely ballad by bassist Charlie Haden has David Sanborn's finest moment of the night. It turns into "Tango Blues" a stunning snaky groove that everyone takes fine solos on. Next up is the Crusaders "Put It Where You Want It" that features Joe Sample, the bands intensity has really hit it's stride. A lovely take on In A Sentimental Mood features Marcus Miller on bass clarinet and a fine Eric Clapton solo which then segue ways into Clapton's "Layla". This is the most unique version I've ever heard with Marcus still playing bass clarinet, a most refreshing take on a FM radio staple. Finally with the band smoking the blues standard "Every Day I've Got The Blues" it's clearly apparent everyone both in the audience and onstage has had a wonderful musical experience.

Yamaha SG BSD-14ASG (birch)

"All of my signature snare drums are unique in design," says Gadd. "This particular series has a simple, straightforward design and tunes up quickly. They all respond well to both loose and tight settings, and that's everything I want in a snare drum. They sound great."

Yamaha SD-255SG (steel)

K Custom Session

Designed with Steve Gadd and featuring his distinctive cymbal sound, the K Custom Session line includes 14" Hi-Hats, 16" and 18" Crashes, and an 18" Ride.

Latin Percussion

LP
is proud that Steve Gadd plays LP percussion instruments exclusively. When he played Latin, he alluded to the master timbaleros such as Tito Puente and (later) congueros such as Giovanni Hidalgo, single-handedly carving out a Latin drumset style that incorporated funk and salsa in a manner that made Gadd a favorite across the Caribbean and the rest of the world. His cowbell work alone became a study: It seemed to speak a wide vocabulary of rhythms derived from mambo shout choruses and cascaras. Gadd is generally credited with creating a style of “NYC Mozambique” rhythm, so much so that a variation, characterized by authoritative bass drum punctuation,
carries his name.
