STEVE GADD BAND

Steve Gadd Band (2018)

This tasty set is

the fourth from

the airtight

Steve Gadd Band.

Atop Gadd’s distinctly

supple sense of groove,

we hear master pianist

Kevin Hays (in for Larry Goldings)

playing lots of earthy Rhodes

with just the right touch—

and singing on “Spring Song.”

Michael Landau provides

rhythmic snap and

bluesy bite on guitar.

Trumpeter Walt Fowler

brings melodic focus

with an unhurried,

crystalline tone.

Longtime Allan Holdsworth

bassist Jimmy Johnson

stays straightforward

and in the pocket

while hugging every

compositional curve,

not least on

Holdsworth’s composition

“Temporary Fault.”

STEVE GADD BAND
Way Back Home (2016)
DVD + CD

The Band is made up of
Steve Gadd on drums,
Michael Landau on guitar,
Jimmy Johnson on bass guitar,
Walt Fowler on trumpet
and flugelhorn and
Larry Goldings on keyboards.

As performances go, the
Steve Gadd Band’s
Way Back Home
is striking for its precision and
elegance and it may be only until
you get to the end that you feel

the full import of the enormous
emotional weight it carries. Gadd is,
after all, returning to where
it all began for him: Rochester NY,
his home, where young dreams
grew old, music flowered and
bloomed; where the whisper and
thunder of his drums first informed
the world of music that a sensational
new percussion colourist was on
his way. An iconic musical journey
has come full circle and it could not have
happened at a better time –
when the drummer
turned 70 years old.

70 Strong (2015)

Legendary studio drummer
Steve Gadd’s credits range from
James Brown to Paul Simon,
Steely Dan to Kate Bush. Here
on his second album with his jazz
quintet, Gadd’s tasty beats set the tone
for these groove-laden originals
—think John Scofield and/or MMW
—with his best drum riffage coming
on the funky “Sly Boots” and the
tricky “Foam Home.” Several band
members contribute originals
with the soulful “Duke’s Anthem”
also being a highlight. The band
also do a rocking version of Jan
Hammer’s “Oh Yeah?” and cover
“Freedom Jazz Dance"

(and throw in other
Eddie Harris licks as well).

STEVE GADD BAND
Gadditude (2013)

Gadditude finds the man of the hour
fronting/backing a band that's
been backing Taylor for years. Together,
without Taylor, they deliver
a program that's alternately
about fun, feel and depth. Gadd's
partners on this journey—bassist
Jimmy Johnson, trumpeter Walt
Fowler, guitarist Michael Landau
and keyboardist Larry Goldings—
are all supremely gifted players with
shared musical values, making
them ideally suited for this project.
They all know how to simply
throw it down and have a good
time ("The Windup"), but they're
also capable of extreme
sensitivity when the music calls
for different-and-precise
aural coloring ("Scatterbrain").
